Make ceilings look higher

Most of us would gladly say ‘yes please’ to an extra inch or two under the ceiling. Be honest now, who isn’t a fan of those beautiful period homes, full of character, with sash windows and detailed rosettes. Swoon! We may not all have three metres, but there are a few sneaky tricks we can use to fool the eye and create the illusion of more height.

We’ve trawled through the secrets of top interior designers and compiled our fave six tips for you here!

Long mirrors.

@tthese_beautiful_thingss

Mirrors are fantastic for opening up a space and bouncing light around a room - exactly what we want with a low ceiling, right? So investing in a good mirror, ideally one that is tall and narrow, is a no-brainer! Mirrors don’t necessarily have to be full length or free standing to give the illusion of more space. This raw edge mirror in the home of @tthese_beautiful_things does the job superbly! Hanging the mirror a little higher than usual will also give the eye a few extra inches.

White, white, white.

@our_sweet_haven

You can never go wrong with a good white paint, and bringing it from wall to ceiling helps blur the boundaries and create the illusion of height. Neutral colours and tones for decor items and furnishings help open a space, while keeping it serene and beautiful. Tall blooms and branches just like these in the home of @our_sweet_haven are also clever tricks for adding height!

4

Hang ‘em high.

@anchorandbelledesign

Hanging curtains and blinds as high as possible has to be one of the easiest and most effective ways of tricking the eye. Covering the dead space between the top of the window and the ceiling make windows look larger and the room feel taller. Make sure those curtains touch the floor too!

3

Rethink lighting.

@housedoctorcom

Pendants are usually a feature item in a room, but if the ceiling is low they can make it feel even lower - as well as being super impractical! So. What to do? Well, using a variety of lighting options and different styles of lamps on tables, walls and floor can create pools of light and bring a lovely element of coziness to the space!

2

Frame it.

@thehousethatblackbuilt

We couldn’t mention wall framing without mentioning the DIY queen @thehousethatblackbuilt - this gal knows how to frame wall!

And look what it does for the space. Of course it is adds a decorative element, and is bang on trend, but visually it frames the artwork perfectly so that the eye goes straight to it first…and then to the framing which is taller than it is wider - creating proportions for the eye which help push that ceiling up!

1

Keep it low.

@scandinavian.interior

The lower the furniture, the more wall we can see. Seems pretty obvious doesn’t it! But this doesn’t only go for sofas; keep your design simple so that the eye doesn’t get too distracted. This kind of styling that hugs the floor with pops of height by @scandinavian.interior is a perfect example of keeping it low!
