Office Reno
Probably better referred to as a working space, I decided to convert my spare room into an office/play room/studio. As to not feel too daunting I divided the space into three projects that I could better commit to and fully achieve the initial goal . I find sometimes that I can have one million different ideas when decorating. What works best for me is to create a mood board of different design elements I adore, then highlight what I need for my space to function and see what fits best. A lot of the time I fall in love with the idea of a design image but realistically know its not practical at all for my home...its nice to dream sometimes!
I needed the work space asap as myself and my husband were sharing desks, penciling in times to switch laptops in and out and schedule zooms so we decided to start with the office reno section first.
Choosing neutral colours and soft tones for this space I wanted to make it feel light and airy. I also needed it to give me space to plan and create projects while also providing quite a bit of storage. Not a lot to ask for, right??
My creative mind gets its fill by browsing Pinterest; I love this site for soo many reasons! There so many design ideas to help when looking for inspiration but mainly I get sucked down a rabbit hole and lose hours of my life mindlessly scrolling. After pinning different elements of a million home offices, supply rooms and bedroom designs I was set on a ply wood built-in system. We sketched it up and contacted a carpenter to build and install the main desk unit.
Deciding on ply wood was an easy choice due to the light, bright colour and thought it would look fab in the space. Also, as the cabinets would be quite long for the additional storage that I needed, the overall aesthetic wouldn’t seem too overpowering. Opting for no handles on the cabinets helped to maintain clean lines and achieve that minimal Scandinavian feel.
Fluted walls have been on my DIY list for a while now but I hadn’t found the exact project I wanted to test them..until the backsplash. The back panel of the office was left bare for me to trial this new idea of mine. Millions and millions of curved trim pieces were measured, cut and glued to the back wall to create an amazing textured finish….I absolutely adore it! We started with accurate measuring of the back wall, roughly twenty half-round trims in long lengths were bought from Woodies and then cut to fit from the bottom of the cabinet to the top of the desk. The trim cuttings were secured to the wall with adhesive and then an additional trim across the top to finish it off.
If you have seen this image on our Insta @froeliving, you will notice the paint defines this entire space as its continued from the walls to the ceiling which I think is such a simple trick to add another layer to this design.
The remainder of my workspace was left clean and clear, free of clutter! Well its all hidden behind these magnificent doors...but as they say out of sight out of mind….
